If your site doesn’t rank in the top three on Google then you’re losing sales. Lots of sales.

Why your web site should be optimised

  • You are no different to your customers. Where do YOU go to get information when you’re looking to buy something ? If you’re in the United Kingdom I bet it’s Google. A staggering 9 out of 10 of all UK searches are carrried out on Google.
  • How many pages do you look at ? The vast majority of people only ever click a result on page one. If your web site isn’t on page one then you’re losing sales. I bet that you rarely look beyond page three of the results and neither do people looking for your products. In fact, very few people make it to page two.
  • Position one on Google gets 2.5 times as many clicks as position two. By simply moving up one place you could double your sales for that keyword. Position one gets a staggering 70 times more clicks as position twelve. What could that do to your business ?
  • Most Web sites rank for just a handful of phrases when they should rank for dozens of related phrases. Whilst it’s true that most traffic will come from just a couple of search phrases, significant numbers of visitors will use those other, less common phrases. If they can’t find your web site then they’ll find someone else’s.

Does your Web site suffer from any of these problems ?

  • Missing or duplicate page titles can massively reduce the numbers of people who click through to your site from the search results. Each and every search result is like a classified advert. Would you click on a blank advert ?
  • Missing or duplicate page descriptions can also damage the click through rates. Who’s going to click on an advert that doesn’t tell you what the product is ?
  • Ugly web addresses that don’t contain keywords can harm your search results because Google (and the other search engines) can’t highlight the keywords in the url and so attract the searchers eye (and therefore, their click). Search engine friendly url’s can increase click through ratios.
  • Duplicate content occurs when the same page content can be found on multiple web pages. The search engines aren’t very good at figuring out which is meant to be the definative version so they often downgrade all copies that they find forcing these pages lower down the rankings.
  • Poor quality inbound links don’t pass the authority to your site that it needs to rank well. The search engines look at both the quantity AND quality of your inbound links when calculating your web site’s authority. More authority means higher rankings.
